Esen Karamursel Akpek, M.D. is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and the Co-Director of Ophthalmology Clerkship Program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Akpek has been on the faculty since 1999 and is the Director of the Ocular Surface Diseases and Dry Eye Clinic of the Wilmer Eye Institute, The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Akpek specializes in external diseases of the eye and corneal surgery. Her clinical expertise includes inflammatory eye disorders, allergic and immunologic diseases of the cornea and the conjunctiva, scleritis, uveitis, cataract surgery, corneal transplantation, limbal stem cell transplantation and keratoprosthesis.

Dr. Akpek´s current research focuses on the new treatments for allergic conjunctivitis and dry eye condition. She is the recipient of several national and international awards and honors including Cora Verhagen Immunology Prize, American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award, Daughters of Ataturk Award and others. She has published and co-authored over 50 scientific articles, as well as many book chapters.

Dr. Akpek received her medical training at the Hacettepe University School of Medicine, Ankara, Turkey. Following her internship and residency training at Ankara Numune Hospital, she completed ophthalmology subspecialty training at The Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Service of The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School. Thereafter, she also completed a fellowship program in Cornea, Cataract, and external Disease at the Wilmer Eye Institute, The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
